Collect Earth Training and LULUCF assessment in eSwatini (Swaziland)

Collect Earth is a tool that enables data collection through augmented visual interpretation of satellite images. In conjunction with Google Earth, Bing Maps and Google Earth Engine, users can analyse high and very high-resolution satellite imagery for a wide variety of purposes, including Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) assessments. This software, developed in the framework of the OpenForis initiative, has already been used by FAO FRA in partnership with several universities around the world to perform a global assessment of forest resources.

The training was conducted at the eSwatini Ministry of Agriculture from July 2nd to 6th, 2018 and included 17 participants from MoA, ENTC, UNESWA, MET, Forestry and others.

Presentation of LULUCF assessment with Collect Earth by S. Cianciullo

The course was coordinated by the FAO-Rome representative, Dr. Silvio Cianciullo, with the assistance of the SECOSUD II team: Dr. Luca Malatesta (Scientific Coordinator), and Edna Munjovo (research assistant for LULUCF assessment in Mozambique).

The capacities acquired will be critical, as some of the participants will collaborate with SECOSUD II to produce a national LULUCF dataset on eSwatini, monitoring Land Use Change over 15 years (2001 -2016). The results will be used as baseline data for Sustainable Land Management, mitigating the impact of Climate Change, and setting Land Degradation Neutrality goals for local institutions.

On June 22 and 23, SECOSUD II Project organized an international conference, held at the Auditorium 1501 in the Main Campus of the Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) in Maputo, and focused on the integration of the three UN Conventions on environment (CBD, UNCCD, UNFCCC)  in the SADC countries.
The event, attended by around 150 participants and with great media attention, focused on the dual objective of presenting academic and institutional experience from Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and Italy towards the definition of instruments and approaches that can contribute transversally to achieve the common goals of the so-called three Rio Conventions (biodiversity, fight against desertification and climate change), and at the same time bringing together the main partners of the initiative to synchronize the actions and maximize the synergies for future programming.
